What is Line Betting?
Line betting (also called margin or handicap betting) is one of the most popular NRL betting markets. The bookmaker sets a points spread and you bet on whether a team will cover that line or not. It's the market where knowledge of how games actually play out — not just who wins — turns into profit.
How the NRL Line Works
If the Panthers are -8.5 against the Tigers, they must win by 9 or more points for a Panthers line bet to win. Conversely, the Tigers +8.5 means they can lose by up to 8 points — or win outright — for the bet to succeed. - Short turnaround: Teams with a 5-day break (Thursday to Tuesday) often underperform.
- Score effects: The 0–68 Tigers–Panthers game is the extreme case — once a blowout starts, the favourite keeps covering as the underdog chases points and makes mistakes.
Line Betting Strategies
1. Fade the Public
Popular teams like the Broncos and Rabbitohs often have inflated lines because public money pushes them higher. Look for value on the underdog when the line looks stretched.
2. Back Strong Defences
Teams with elite defences (Storm, Panthers) cover tight lines more consistently. They rarely lose by big margins, making them excellent picks as underdogs getting points.
3. Avoid Bad Travellers
Some teams simply don't travel well. The Warriors at home are a different proposition to the Warriors away. Factor travel distance and time zones into your line betting.
4. Late Line Movement
Watch the line in the hour before kick-off. Significant late movement usually indicates sharp money or late team changes. If the line moves against a key player being a late withdrawal, follow the smart money.
Margin Betting (Exact Winning Margins)
Some bookmakers offer exact margin markets (e.g. Panthers 1-12, Panthers 13+). These offer higher odds than standard line betting but require a more precise prediction. Use these when you have a strong read on how a game will play out. When the Line Beats H2H

Reading the Number
Bookmakers build the line from power ratings plus 2–4 points for home ground, then adjust for weather, travel and injuries. Line vs Margin Bands
